I kept wanting to add a post, but I wanted to upload some photos, then I wanted to upload a new photo for a header.  Then it became a hassle with all the pre-requirements I was putting on myself.  I really am a head case.  Upload the photos later, change the header later for Chrissakes!

The holidays were great, with our weather being the only exception.  The recordbreaking, over 5′ of snow in a couple of weeks, caused a lot of problems with getting to work.  Now, I don’t necessarily feel incomplete if I can’t work, however, deadlines march on whether I can get to work or not.  It was a stressful couple of weeks.  We’re in a “tropical” phase right now with no snow, but rain.  Rain is fine.  Of course, we have flood warnings, but I can live with that.  I don’t live anywhere that will flood so the solution is simple – avoid places that will flood!

During the holiday stretch I decided to indulge myself in taking the guitar up again.  I played when I was a kid and then abandoned it as other things became more important (cars, boys, being stupid).  Then I took up piano in young adulthood and really liked it.  However, I don’t own a piano and to have the type of electronic piano I want, I’d have to come up with a pretty hefty chunk of change.

So to get back in touch with the side of my brain devoted to less serious things, I decided to try out the guitar again.  I made the fatal mistake (and I suspected it was a mistake when I did it) of buying a really cheap starter guitar.  Well, that lasted about a week.  I now have a lower-end, but awesome Martin DXM which is so much easier to play I find myself playing for hours non-stop and I have to literally force myself to put my toy down.

And finally, I’ve decided to move my physical office.  I found a great location walking distance from the courthouse.  I’ll be roomies with another attorney who shares my practice area.  I wanted to move into an office sharing arrangement where I had other attorneys nearby with which to commisserate.  I’m excited and nervous at the same time because I’ve raised my overhead.  But it’s been a year (gasp) of running my own practice so it’s a good time to upgrade.

MyMiniCity a really cool new game that I’m restraining myself from playing.  Build your own city and then keep constant tabs on it and get help from other mini city builders to add infrastructure

And if you want to see an already built mini city, check out my friend’s mini city and in return you support her infrastructure just by clicking her link at Magdalenia.

Lately it seems like every article I browse pertaining to cosmetics always mentions bronzer.  Apparently, I’m supposed to use bronzer at all times.  Suddenly it’s assumed that I use bronzer.  I’m confused.  When was I supposed to start using bronzer?  Are people looking at me askance wondering why I’m not using bronzer?  I should point out right now that my spell checker does not acknowledge the existence of bronzer.

Anywho…that’s kind of what my mind has been like today, wandering in and out of reality and things that matter.  It took me an incredibly long time to get my head into some revisions that needed done for a complaint I’ve been working on over the last few days.  It seemed like every time I settled down and started concentrating I would be interrupted by some outside force or my mind would start wondering about important, cutting edge issues like whether or not my life lacks luster because I don’t own bronzer.

And what the hell happened to December?  Didn’t we just do Thanksgiving?

Finally, I’m coming up empty on the Random Dog Photo today.  I have a photo of Koba in his elf outfit sitting on a memory card in my camera.  Maybe next time I post I’ll upload it.  Maybe next time I post I’ll be bronzed.

The past 24 hours are very newsy:

The state bar has finally assigned my bar number. I’m officially an attorney. Watch out world.

I assembled our brand new fully lit, hinged Christmas tree all by myself.

We had our first snow.

Sallie Mae sent me my first loan statement. I sent Sallie Mae my first deferment request.

All four dogs had a bath.

Proof of first snow:

My very last gift to myself for passing the bar was a Dooney & Burke handbag. I’m not kidding about the warranty. Can I afford a purse that has a warranty? Not particularly.

Which brings me to the real subject of this post. Job hunting is not going well which isn’t a surprise in the Northwest market (especially since I want to stay put where I live). While I continue job hunting, I’m going solo. To make this enterprise possible, I’m going to start up at home. Future contract work with a small firm has been lined up. As soon as I get my mythical bar number in the mail, I can start marketing myself for both contract work and private clients. My background is in civil litigation with a focus on family law. Since family law is what I know best, that is what I’m going to practice.

Right now I’m open to either getting a permanent job with someone else being responsible for keeping the lights on or settling into a solo practice. Beginning after Thanskgiving I’m going to start doing all the stuff I really don’t like much such as attending organization lunches, going to events and networking, networking. Blech! As severely uncomfortable as self-promotion may be, it won’t be nearly as painful as bar preparation.

For now I’m using a mail center for an address and I just hooked up VOIP for my fax and home office line. Who knows, maybe I’ll decide I love being a solo. If so, I’ll be in the market for an office share arrangement in the future.

And finally a big Shout Out to Shelley of The Menagerie who kindly responded to my frantic email seeking advice. Go check out her blog and her cute Peaches.

I love people who design xml blog templates and then post them on the web for me to use for free. Although I have a link credit in my sidebar, I should call attention to the designer of this lovely new template located here.

I gotta go reserve my spot in bed before a wiener dog is given my space. Bulleted info dump:

  • I have a new desk for my future home office. woot!
  • If you like different hip-hop/rap with great lyrics and produced by the always-wonderful Trent Reznor check out Saul Williams’ latest release. You can download a low quality version for free or get it in the format of your choice for only five bucks! Trust me it’s awesome and it is here.
  • I have a new pre-lit fake Christmas tree. I love it. No needles on the floor and no lights to hang. I just unhinge the perfect tree and hang my pretties.
  • I have a hair appointment to get my “natural blonde” touched up and to plot either a brief grow-out or a new cut.
  • I have a manicure/pedicure schedule just a couple of days before my swearing-in. I’m going to be glam in a suit.

That’s it for now. This creature may be invading my personal bed space right now. Must go defend territory.

Today I headed to Nordstrom’s over lunch to grab some basic items at the cosmetics counter. Of course, once I got to the cosmetics counter I strayed from “basic items” into supplemental items I just had to possess.

During her very successful upsell session, the woman who was assisting me raved about the cilantro-lime chicken salad at the Nordstrom’s Cafe. When she offered to call in an order to go, I just had to have the salad too.

After paying for my preplanned and impulse buys, I picked up my salad and diet coke which cost me … brace yourselves … eleven freakin’ dollars. The salad was very good, but no salad is eleven dollars good.

This concludes today’s Act of Stupidity.

First we went to breakfast and stuffed ourselves silly. Then we went farm cruising with malamute, Wakonda, in tow. I have a bowl full of three different varieties of Washington apples. Not the waxy, shiny kind, but real apples. Wakonda was a hit. Little children can’t get enough of him. Everywhere we went I heard a chorus of “Husky! Husky!” which of course meant a stop for petting. Wakonda was in his element and I kept a wary eye out for the Husky paparazzi.

I reveled in my slow weekend of studies. I don’t get them too often. In fact, things will start cooking as we get nearer to finals. I did start my Con Law outline and was unhappy with how detailed the monster is going to be. I set that aside so I didn’t ruin my slow weekend. It will be the monster of all outlines and it’s important since our test is open book. The remainder of my classes won’t require such weighty tome.

I topped off the weekend on Sunday by making a family recipe for vegetable beef soup. It just occurred to me that I can easily convert it to stew. I may have to make that a domestic project.

Meanwhile, the cold/flu disease is taking its toll on my town. I noticed a lot of missing students yesterday – students that are never absent. It’s already taken down the attorney I work with and the assistant. I’m washing my hands non-stop and breathing very little. I’m hoping I can dodge the bullet.

It appears this weekend is going to be pretty light lawschool-wise. So light in fact that I think I will actually have time to start outlining my notes! Giddy.

I’m feeling brash enough to actually consider doing something fun today. I’m thinking breakfast at IHop and farm-cruising. There’s a little farm community nearby that goes nuts during the autumn. Lots of apples, pumpkins, corn mazes and so on. All the little farms set up stands and people just drive around the area to buy fresh fruit and farmy-type things. The pumpkin patches are full of kids, tractor rides galore and so on. Autumn color here is starting to peak, so the thought of roaming pumpkin patches appeals to me.
