There are a number of authors I really enjoy. Even while going through law school, I devoured books for fun. It was the only way I kept my sanity. This page will be kept open for updating and editing. After checking out some of my list, please feel free to make recommendations in the comments. I’m always looking for something new.
Elizabethan History is one of my favorite pastimes. Here are some of my favorite authors on Elizabeth I, the Tudors in general and Mary Queen of Scotts:
Alison Weir is a wonderful author and her research is meticulous.
David Starkey is another good historian. He wrote a wonderful book devoted solely to Henry’s six wives.
Antonia Fraser is also highly recommended.
For historical novels to read for pure enjoyment, I’ve gobbled up Philippa Gregory and Margaret George.
I am also an avid reader of the Fantasy genre. I think this must be because I need the level of escapism that comes with a well written fantasy novel. I prefer trilogies or series, and if I can find an author I adore I become obsessed with each new release.
Robert Jordan (may he RIP) is the absolute number one in my estimation. Amongst other works, he developed the incredible world of the Wheel of Time. He passed away in the middle of writing the twelfth and final book. The book is to be completed by Brandon Sanderson, a recent favorite of mine.
George R. R. Martin constructs characters I love to hate, and hate to love. If you’ve read Mr. Martin’s work, you understand that first sentence.
Terry Goodkind just finished his wonderful Sword of Truth series. I’ll be interested to see what he comes up with next.
I’m also attracted to the Paranomal genre which probably comes from the same need for escapism. I was originally going to designate this as Vampire genre, but I’ve discovered authors that add a few more creatures to the genre making Vampire too-limiting for a description.
(List coming soon.)
Currently Reading: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet
