Ambition took over today.
First, I wanted to Summer up the site and add a new header graphic I’ve been toying with for awhile. That led to…
Cleaning up my CSS and getting rid of nasty useless code. I also got rid of the image headers in the sidebar because I want to change the look without creating a million different images. I made a few other changes to make stylesheet changes go quickly. That led to…
Upgrading to the new beta version of Movable Type. This did not go smoothly. After much fumbling, I’m back online. Actually, the blog never went down, just the important stuff, like how to run the blog.
With the new version of MT I will get notifications again (I hope) of new comments.
Speaking of ambition: Godspeed to all of you taking the bar exam. Best of luck.
Actually, I was always returning to law school. But today, I finally received confirmation that all financing is in place for my brain.
It’s a bittersweet moment – great for now, hell for later.
Today is overcast which is standard because it is the weekend after all. Beautiful days shine outside my office window and then when Saturday arrives, no more beautiful days.
I’ve been busy updating the Lawyer Wardrobe. I have the basics – one black suit, one blue suit and one cream suit. I need to add some more bling (because I hate being too conservative) and more blouses underneath. I’m mulling over adding another suit, but since it is summer, suit shopping is lackluster.
And why is that I must ask? Because I am female. Men can find suits year-round. Women, must wait for fall and winter to buy suits. Sure, some suits occasionally show up in the Spring or Summer but the colors are usually the latest trend. This year I’ve seen an unhealthy amount of lime green on the racks. Call me crazy, but I have zero interest in a lime green kermit-the-frog suit.
Shelley over at The Menagerie has posted some great guidelines for surviving law school. I am personally going to tackle her advice to schedule one day off a week.
I hereby pick Saturday.
It makes good sense to take a rest day. Seriously, if you work out, the trainers will always tell you that the rest days are as important as the work out days. It gives the body time to rebuild. Same with the mind. The brain that we are all investing big bucks in needs some time off to sort through the endless data and file it all in the appropriate place. Constantly hammering the oh-so-expensive-brain will result in an expensive pile of mushy fog.
Plus, when the studying gets to be too much and the memo begins to haunt knowing that I have a day off to look forward to will push me to keep going because there is a light at the end of the tunnel each week.
Saturday.
Occasionally I check in at a law school related discussion board. Today I spent more time there than usual and much to my absolute freakin’ amazement, someone has stolen two of my posts here on this blog and posted them on the message board as his/her own!
It was a very surreal feeling reading familiar words posted on a forum and then realizing they were my own words.
I’ve reported this thievery to the moderator of course. I haven’t asked for any sort of action, but I thought it should be mentioned.
I don’t mind anyone using my blog (it’s flattering). But a mention of the source and a link would be polite dontcha think?
Plagarism is not a nice way to begin a career as a lawyer.
I have woken up to the news of the horrific terrorist attack on London. I know the “terrorist” bit hasn’t been officially confirmed, but let’s call a spade a spade.
My heart goes out to everyone in the UK.
I had a birthday on July 2nd. It was uneventful as birthdays go. But, I bought myself the coolest birthday present. Here she is:
Isn’t she sleek, sexy and adorable all in one? I bought a wireless FM transmitter for the IPod months ago by another manufacturer and it didn’t work worth a damn. I returned it and resigned myself to burning my own mix CDs. Tedious.
Now I have an overwhelming urge to clean my car to showcase my new beauty.
Pony packs were on sale at my favorite nursery. I just had to buy a flat. Our front yard is distressing and I’m perking it up with flora and fauna. Naturally, I picked the hottest time of the day when the sun sits exactly over the front yard to insert the 48 petunias into the ground. With the stubborness of a law student (we’re all stubborn to the point of stupid which is why we are law students in the first place) I would not stop until all 48 were in the ground.
After all that work, I am witness to 48 spindly pony-pack petunias bordering the front yard. In two weeks they should be beyond the spindly stage.
Must-do list for the weekend:
1. Bark and more bark around the 48 spindly petunias.
2. Bark and more bark around the outside border of our rock wall.
3. Possibly more flowers in the petunia area (pony packs on sale!).
4. Laundry (yuck).
5. Weed/trim/deadhead the perennial plot out front.
6. Wash the dogs.
I’ve recently learned that I will be able to use my laptop to take the Washington State Bar Exam. Glee! I was planning to type the exam since I write at a snail’s pace. But, I was not looking forward to sitting in front of a typewriter for the first time in a decade or so. How cool is that?! Now I will at least have the security of bringing my faithful laptop with me. I’ll have a friend in the room.
Now the bad news. I have to buy a new Con Law case book. I held onto my book from Con Law I figuring it would be used in Con Law II. However, the prof I picked uses a different book. Cha ching and dammit.
Having to buy the new case book is karma in action. When I learned about the new bar rule allowing laptops in 2007, I traipsed around the firm bragging to associates that I get to use a laptop. I reveled in the look of envy and sheer hate bestowed on me while I gloated. Subsequently discovering I have to shell out $120 or so for a new case book trimmed my sails.
Weekend plans consist of getting the veggie garden in. We had one clear day last weekend, but J and I dorked around planning to actual do the work on Sunday. Sunday it rained. The forecast isn’t looking so good for this weekend, but come hell or high water the veggies must be established.
I received a bunch of emails telling me a nasty trackback bot was busy trying to hit some older entries. When I received the emails a light went off: Oh yeah, I have a blog. I should blog.
As Fall term approaches at the end of August, I’m still not remotely interested in going back to school. However, the idea isn’t quite as repulsive as it was a month ago.
Grades came in and they were resoundingly mediocre. Oh well. I’ve fixed some issues that caused mediocrity last year. Mainly, the ability to chose my classes and schedule gives me two days off classes during the week for office time. With the exception of two hours mid-week, the remaining three days are devoted to school. Much better than doing the school/work thing every single day.
Fortunately, my hum-drum grades were not a total shock. I knew I was pretty much killing myself last year and the end result would lack sparkle. After all, in spite of dire warnings I worked my first year. Eating and having a roof over my head appealed to me. Call me crazy! I already decided that the 2L and 3L years would be the chase-the-grades years.
Of course, there are thousands out there who would proclaim my career absolute toast because I didn’t ace my first year. I’m not overly worried. It seems like everything that doesn’t equal perfect in law school equals sure career disaster.
La di da. Let the sky fall. It’s fallen on me before LOL!
All it took was being released from law school for me to abandon my poor blog. My blog that took me through my first year of school. Bad girl!
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my summer off. Although I’ve been working full time, it’s been a blast because I can work to exhaustion come home and relax! No cases to read, no papers to write, no research to do…awesome.
Yesterday I registered for Fall. Amazingly I grabbed the exact classes I wanted on my “first choice” list. On the downside, I just committed myself to about $600 worth of books. There’s really no way to avoid that particular downside in law school.
Grades aren’t out until the end of the week. Whether or not I mention the grades will depend on how I feel about my grades! The grades will be in as I drive to Montana for the long weekend. I’ll be viewing them for the first time in the cocoon of my parent’s home. I’ve warned them that if I head towards the bathtub with a toaster in my hand, please stop me.
